Petra Little Theatre (PLT) is a theatre organization and venue in Surabaya that manages theatre performances in English. With the modern theatre as the basic concept, Petra
Little Theatre conveys the works of excellent authors to witty realistic drama performances. The chosen authors vary from outstanding major playwrights, such as Ibsen, Williams, and Albee to brilliant contemporary playwrights, such as Neil Simon, Fornes, April de Angelis with various themes selection.
PLT was established officially in the year 2002. It was born after the long process of consideration and preparation. The consideration was based on the fact that, as an English Department, there is a need of bridging drama courses into practice. Furthermore, there was hardly any English theatre in Surabaya. Therefore, PLT is the answer of both needs; giving the students the chance to practice theatre in order to understand the theory and providing venue for people in Surabaya to watch theatre performance in English.
Within these two goals, the preparation, then, was made in terms of software and hardware. For the software, a theatre curriculum was designed with theatre courses such as Acting, Directing, Theatrical Design, Play Production, Film Production and Scriptwriting. This curriculum now is integrated in English Department's curriculum, as one of the professional package. The hardware preparation appeared in the form of a theatre building. The concept of the theatre/ studio lied on the ideas of modern theatre, which held the tenets of realistic theatre. Petra Little Theater is a mini theater with complete equipments and facilities for regular drama performances in English. Students of Drama and the Theatre & Film Professional Package regularly practice, produce, and perform at this unique facility of the Department. It also welcomes external users and researchers.
